Senior HR Advisor

About the Role

The Senior HR Advisor proactively partners with business leaders, delivering contemporary and strategic HR support across the full employee lifecycle including,, employee relations, and industrial relations. This role leads case management, including disciplinary and grievance processes, and provides expert advice on performance management, fitness for work, and organisational design. It also manages union right of entry and contributes to collective bargaining negotiations.

With a strong understanding of employment legislation and the ability to interpret relevant instruments, the Senior HR Advisor ensures compliance and promotes best practice across the organisation. This role develops leadership capability, including coaching and mentoring leaders and developing training programs to build confidence, navigate people challenges, and ensure leaders can have effective conversations. The Senior HR Advisor also supports the growth of HR colleagues through mentoring and capability development, contributing to the creation of a collaborative and skilled team.

About You

You are an experienced HR professional with strong expertise in employee and industrial relations, organisational change and workforce planning. You are a trusted advisor who can build effective relationships with leaders, navigate complex people matters and deliver practical, commercially focused HR solutions. You thrive in a fast-paced environment, enjoy coaching leaders and are passionate about creating positive workplace outcomes.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Employment and Industrial Relations

  • Provide expert advice and support on employee relations matters, including case management of grievance, disciplinary and performance management casework and workplace investigations.
  • Interpret and apply industrial instruments, Awards and employment contracts, providing accurate and compliant advice within the relevant employment and industrial relations system.
  • Provide expert advice and support to the work health and safety team on fitness for work, injury management, and return to work.
  • Provide expert advice and support to the work health and safety team on worker-related incident investigations, corrective actions and resolution of health and safety matters.
  • Manage general interactions with the union, including right of entry, and participate in collective bargaining as required.
  • Ensure compliance with employment legislation, industry-specific guidelines, and best practice standard

Leadership Development and Coaching

  • In collaboration with Learning & Development, develop and deliver training and coaching for people leaders on people management fundamentals, including effective conversations, performance management, managing ill and injured workers, and investigation basics. 
  • Coach and mentor people leaders through live people matters, building confidence, capability and self-sufficiency in managing their teams.
  • Mentor and support HR team members, sharing employee relations and industrial relations knowledge and fostering professional growth.

HR Practice and Compliance

  • Review, update, and implement HR policies, ensuring relevance and compliance.
  • Support workforce planning and organisational design.  
  • Identify, develop and implement initiatives and process improvements, and contribute to HR projects, ensuring timely delivery of outcomes and alignment with organisational goals.
  • Contribute to attraction and retention strategies in collaboration with recruitment and support employee engagement and cultural initiatives.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated experience managing complex employee relations casework, including grievance and disciplinary processes and workplace investigations.
  • Knowledge of, and experience in applying, employment law, Awards and Industrial Agreements.
  • Experience in working with unions, including right of entry and collective bargaining.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor and develop leaders and colleagues, including through delivering training to build people management capability.
  • Sufficient knowledge of legislated psychosocial hazard management obligations, and the ability to interpret these in guiding and influencing organisational design.
  • Ability to identify and mitigate risks.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to develop effective relationships. 
  • Ability to identify and mitigate risks.
  • Operational experience with HR Information Systems.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to prepare formal documents and adapt communication styles to suit the audience.
  • Excellent time management skills, with the ability to balance multiple priorities and deliver results within deadlines.
